Burdock, also known as Bardane, Clotburr, Beggars Buttons and Gypsy Rhubarb, is a carrot-like root from the plant Arctium lappa. In Japan Burdock Root (Gobo) is eaten as vegetable. Burdock Root contains inulin, a natural dietary fiber, and has also been used traditionally to provide nutritional support for normal, healthy digestion. Burdock Root is an important traditional cleansing herb, providing nourishing support for the natural functioning of a healthy circulatory system. Burdock Root is rich in B vitamins and E. It also contains manganese, copper, iron, zinc and sulfur.

APPEARANCE

Burdock is native to Europe and Northern Asia and is now widespread throughout the United States as well, where it grows wild. A member of the daisy family, burdock is a stout common weed with burrs that stick to clothing or animal fur. The plant grows to a height of approximately three to four feet. It has purple flowers that bloom between the months of June and October. Burdock has wavy, heart-shaped leaves that are green on the top and whitish on the bottom. The deep roots are brownish-green, or nearly black on the outside.

HISTORY

Historically, Burdock Root was used by traditional Japanese and Chinese practitioners to provide nutritional support for the natural functioning of a healthy circulatory system. This valuable and versatile herb was also used as nutritional support for a healthy digestive system. In India and Russia it was used as nutritional support for the immune system. And in China, Burdock Root was widely thought to be an aphrodisiac.

The genus name Arctium is from the Greek, arktos, meaning bear, a reference to the plant shaggy burrs. The word Burdock itself may be derived from the French word beurre (butter) since French farm women of prior centuries used to wrap their butter in the large cool leaves of the Burdock plant to keep it from melting on the way to market.

The product called Velcro was developed by George de Mestral of Switzerland after observing the burdock seed's hundreds of tiny hooks through his magnifying glass.
