(Gaultheria procumbens). Wintergreen is a perennial herb that grows to 5 or 6 inches with white drooping flowers in June and July followed by bright red berries. Native to the eastern portion of North America, Wintergreen is found from Canada, Newfoundland, and Minnesota to Georgia and Alabama. Wintergreen Oil is extracted from the leaves, but the berries and remaining portions of the plant are used as well. Wintergreen Oil is a pure essential oil that has been used by traditional healers as a massage agent for occasional joint and muscular concerns. Wintergreen Oil is also used by natural practitioners as nutritional support in instances of minor respiratory conditions such as occasional mucous discharge.
